Small icons designed to carry the weight of a massive platform.
SiriusXM's streaming app hosts hundreds of channels spanning music, talk, sports, comedy and news. When the platform underwent a major redesign, every channel needed a logo and app tile that was recognizable, legible at thumbnail size and coherent within a system housing an enormous range of genres, personalities and brand identities.
As part of the in-house creative culture lab, I contributed to designing and refining a library of channel logos and app tiles built on three principles: bold typography, simplified iconography and strong contrast. The work had to function at the smallest digital sizes — a 60px app tile on a phone screen — while holding its own on larger in-app displays and various display environments.
The deeper challenge was consistency without uniformity. Each channel has its own identity; Bill Gaither's enLighten sounds and looks nothing like Tom Morello's World Wide Rebel Radio. The system had to honor that range while making the whole platform feel like it belonged to one brand.
Icons that Guide
Design Decisions
-
Every design decision — type weight, contrast ratio and icon simplification — was tested against the smallest size the tile would ever appear. If it didn't work there, it didn't work.
-
Each app tile needed to feel distinct without breaking the system. Color, typographic style and icon language were the variables; structural grid and contrast standards were fixed.
-
Unlike most app design work, these assets also appeared in vehicles, home TVs and smart devices — requiring a cross-media standard that pure digital work rarely demands.

The top three logos, designed by my colleague. Adam Neumann, established the brand direction. I extended the system by creating the bottom two logos to align with and evolve the existing suite.
